Welcome to Awakenings

Life IS history in the making. Every word we say, everything we do becomes history the moment it is said or done. Life void of memories leaves nothing but emptiness. For those who might consider history boring, think again: It is who we are, what we do and why we are here. We are certainly individuals in our thoughts and deeds but we all germinated from seeds planted long, long ago.

First Week of November

Happenin's and Foodie Fun fill the days of November. Let's look back to 2014 to plan ahead for the upcoming celebrations. The calendar will begin with the first of the month even though we are already three days into November. Consider celebrating those days missed as belated celebrations!

http://awakenings2012.blogspot.com/2014/10/november-is.htmlBegin with reflection on November is...family time, patriotic remembrances and thankfulness! The month of November is packed with historical accounts, challenges and memorable moments for giving thanks.

November 1 begins by callin' all vegans with celebration of World Vegan Day. Pumpkins, winter squash, purple cabbage, carrots, brussel sprouts, red or Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams, cauliflower, kohlrabi, turnips, kale are just some of the more interesting and complex vegetables of fall. You do not have to be a vegetarian to enjoy the deliciousness of vegetables! And, they can be enjoyed any day any time, not just on this one day.

November 2 proves to be quite historical with a step back in time to the American West and a closer look at Uncle Billy, "twin states" admitted to the Union: North Dakota and South Dakota, and the flight of The Spruce Goose.

November 3 Who Knows Sandwiches? Any time is a good time for a sandwich and the day is not over yet! There is late dinner and midnight snack so get to it. There are an abundance of different types of sandwiches. With just a little imagination, the possibilities are endless. Thank you Earl of Sandwich!

November 4 sets the stage for Sugar Shock! Too much of any good thing is not the best idea but definitely difficult advice to follow on National Candy Day! From simple candies and gourmet candy, old-fashioned candy made by hand, to specialty candies crafted by experts who design each piece with TLC.

November 5 is National Doughnut Day! Um-m-m? Somehow this one was missed but not to worry! Some sites say this celebration occurs on June 3 but the donut can be enjoyed any day of the year! The doughnut has already been celebrated in specialty categories so simply revisit for some new ideas...Not your plain donut!, A Sandwich & Dessert, and The Tastiest Cover Up.

November 5 (first Thursday of November) also calls for Men in the Kitchen! Time for the ladies to be pampered and their men to don the aprons! For sure, being served dinner is a welcomed change from all the regular preparation and cooking. No one deserves a break more than the girlfriends, wives and mothers (that includes mother-in-laws)!

November 6 is National Nachos Day. Nachos can be fiery hot. They can be terribly messy. Ranging from plain to spicy, they can be served alone as a snack or with a whole range of toppings thereby constituting an entire meal. It was 1943 when nachos were inadvertently invented for a group of American soldiers' wives hungry from shopping. By the 1970s and 1980s, their popularity was at a peak, especially as stadium fare at Arlington Stadium, which was then the home of the Texas Rangers.

November 7 features a dual celebration: Bears and Chocolate! Your first thought might be a question, "What do bears and chocolate have in common?" Perhaps their commonality lies with the color brown...milk & dark chocolate and brown bear, brown bear. Maybe it is both since chocolate bears do exist, such as the hollow chocolate Lindt Bear figure created with premium Swiss milk chocolate. Actually, they share a day of celebration, which reflects What's Happenin' and Foodie Fun for Everyone.

Are you ready to celebrate?

  yum, yum, yum . . . yummy!
